  1. Marching Powder: A Trust Story of Friendship, Cocaine, and South America's Strangest Jail
    by Thomas McFadden

Marching Powder is the tale of friendship, a place where horror is countered by humor and cruelty and compassion can inhabit the same cell. This is cutting-edge travel-writing and a fascinating account of infiltration into the South American drug culture.

  2. The Book Thief
    by Markus Zusak

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

  3. I think they're great suggestions. I've added them to the reading list. I think the cocaine one will nicely break up the fantastical Night Circus and the Book Thief.

I noticed that the LitLovers list I posted today has Love in the Time of Cholera listed. I've never read this but it's considered a classic and there was a recent scandal in a school about them wanting to remove it from the curriculum for being too "racy". Thoughts?
